This half term Year 2 will be exploring the fascinating world of seafaring buccaneers and ships of fortune. Pirates have captured the imagination of children for generations and in Year 2 we can use them as a basis for working on skills in geography, narrative, poetry, music, dance and art and technology. Pirates is an excellent topic which can really capture the colour and excitement of the wider world and the adventure of inspiring characters.
Over the next few weeks, we will be reading some stories by author Jonny Duddle, practising our sentence composition and sequencing events, as well as focusing on our high level descriptive language and exciting varied vocabulary.
Through a series of exciting and thought-provoking lessons, Year 2 will explore the lands and geographical locations of some of our best known pirates from history, and will be using the laptops and ipad technology to perform in role and research further. Materials in science will enable the pupils to classify, describe and experiment with different objects around us.
In maths, we will be continuing our learning on using models and images to represent different calculations. We will be collecting and analysing data and also focusing on shape and right angles. Times Tables is becoming a figure of Year 2 Maths as we move on through the year and we are hoping to learn our 2x 5x and 10x tables off by heart. Children should make regular use of Mathletics online and focus on times tables learning as much as possible at home.
In RE, we will be looking at Understanding Christianity in more depth. Focusing on the upcoming Easter celebrations and thinking about Christian teachings of love, integrity and faith in God. Pupils will work on Bible stories and take part in faith based assemblies. Year 2 will also be taking part in learning on other faiths this term.
