Promoting British Values

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

This statement outlines the key British Values we actively promote at Meriden CE Primary School:

Democracy is essential to our school community and high importance is placed on the voice of individuals. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Through our school council, Eco team and Worship team, the pupil voice has ample opportunity to be heard and this regularly influences whole-school decisions.

fundamental to life at Meriden CE Primary School. These rules are regularly embedded  and focused upon through invitational collective worship and engaging PSHEE learning opportunities as well as in the wider life of the school such as throughout our extra-curricular opportunities. Our Christian values, which are focused upon each half term, offer a set of behaviours to our children that are found within and complement our rules promoted as a school.

The Rule of Law

The rules and laws that govern our school, community and nation are

The pupils at Meriden school are encouraged to develop and grow in their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence. Children take responsibility for their behaviour but also are aware of the lines of support available in school such as class teachers or our Family Community Mentor. Stereotypes are challenged through well planned opportunities such as Faith Week and our regular visitors to school. A strong anti-bullying culture has become embedded throughout the school and is being further established through the KiVa initiative.

Individual Liberty

Respect is an integral value in our school. We encourage positive attitudes towards difference in all that we do. In particular, we foster these positive attitudes through visits to places of worship, the regular visitors we have to school and our exploration of other faiths through high quality RE. Our annual ‘faith week’ especially provide excellent opportunities to consider the culture, faith and belief systems of religions different to our own and reflect on the impact on ourselves. Our recent faith week focused on the question ‘Who inspires us?’ where we investigated significant people from a variety of faith backgrounds.
